How To Set Up Custom Formative Waypoints

Overview

Custom Formative Waypoints can be created using Wayfinder's bank of research-backed prompts to focus on specific skills or be assigned to a custom class, small group, or individual student. Only those with Principal, School Admin, or Counselor user access can create Custom Formative assessments.

Setting Up a New One-Time Assessment

  1. Navigate to the Waypoints page and click on the "+ Create Formative" button at the top of the page 
  2. Click on the "New One-Time Assessment" button on the left 
  3. Name your assessment and confirm that you've read the Acknowledgment
  4. Select your reporting type
    • Student-Reported: Students respond to prompts about themselves. Students will see the assessment on their dashboard when they log in. 
    • Educator-Observed: Educators respond to prompts about students based on observations. Educators will see the assessment in the To-Do List on their Home dashboard. See Educator-Observed Waypoints for details.  
  5. Select the grade band 
  6. Click "+ Add Prompt" to add up to 6 prompts and use the "Preview Assessment" button to preview your custom Formative
  7. On the Assignment page, select whether you would like to administer the assessment to specific students, or entire classes. Then, use the new dropdown to specify which students or classes are administered the assessment. 
  8. If you selected Educator-Observed as your reporting type, the next step will be to select the assessment reporter
    • If you select "Auto-Assign Reporter", the educator rostered to the class with the students in the previous step will be automatically selected as the reporter.
    • If you'd like to choose a different reporter, use the "Select educator" dropdown
  9. Select the cadence of the assessment
    • Recurring: Waypoints will be administered at regular intervals over a period of time. You can select the frequency, start date, and end date of the assessment. 
    • Pre/Post: Waypoints will be administered twice on scheduled dates. You can select the date ranges for the pre-assessment window and the post-assessment window. 
  10. Review the details of your assessment, and then click "Create Formative"

Setting Up a New Custom Formative Template

Templates allow you to easily save basic custom Formative settings to that you can easily copy them over to future assessments. To set up a new template: 

  1. Navigate to the Waypoints page and click on the "+ Create Formative" button at the top of the page 
  2. Click the "Create a Template" or "New Template" button
  3. Name your template
  4. Select your reporting type
    1. Student-Reported: Students respond to prompts about themselves. Students will see the assessment on their dashboard when they log in. 
    2. Educator-Observed: Educators respond to prompts about students based on observations. Educators will see the assessment in the To-Do List on their Home dashboard. See Educator-Observed Waypoints for details.  
  5. Select the grade band 
  6. Click "+ Add Prompt" to add up to 6 prompts
  7. Review the details of your assessment, and use the "Preview Assessment" button to preview your custom Formative 
  8. To finish, click "Create Formative" 
  9. Once saved, you can find the template under My Templates

Using an Existing Custom Formative Template

  1. Navigate to the Waypoints page and click on the "+ Create Formative" button at the top of the page 
  2. Use the dropdown at the top of the page to filter between your school's templates and the templates you've created
  3. Locate and select the template you'd like to use
  4. Then, click the "Use Template" button 
  5. Continue through the steps to finalize your settings.

 

Editing an Existing Custom Formative Template

  1. Navigate to the Waypoints page and click on the "+ Create Formative" button at the top of the page 
  2. Use the dropdown at the top of the page to filter between your school's templates and the templates you've created
  3. Locate the template you'd like to edit
  4. Click "Details" to the right of the assessment name 

  5. From here, you can choose to 
    • Delete the template
    • Edit the template, or
    • Use the template

 

Editing or Deleting a Live Custom Formative

  1. Navigate to the Waypoints page
  2. Under Filter Assessments on the left, select the custom Formative you'd like to edit
  3. Click on the settings cog icon at the top right of the page
  4. Select "Edit Formative" to edit the assessment, or select "Delete" to delete it.
